I’ve had Dataland for about a year now and I’m happy to report that time has only worked in its benefit. Whether or not I appreciate the album (I do, I love it) it feels as though my brain forces me to hear it, at least monthly, just to get one of the many songs out of my head. There isn’t anything like it and, as a result, no substitute quenches the Dataland thirst. I have high hopes this isn’t the last album by Wippy, but I know he’s got a lot on his plate.

Like its continuously invoked birds in motion, Murmurations delivers a frenzied flurry of symphonic prog, math rock, ambient, avant-garde, samba, jazz; a joyful eruption of multicolored feathers in flight. Bruce Cockburn,, Rickie Lee Jones, Paul Weller, Andy Partridge, Roddy Frame, James Grant, Duncan Sheik, and Jared Leach are the first artists to come to mind as I listen to this. And Ben has such an incredible poetic wit and inimitable (and winning) singing style to go along with his incredible guitar (and multi-instrumental) skills. Every song on this album is an absolute delight to hear--first time and repeatedly. A top 10 album for 2022.

Mysterious, yet nostalgic, Isolubilia is truly an ode to the romance found in the pursuit of a mystery. Musically rich in turbulence and serenity, majesty and humbleness, this album made me feel both lonely, yet understood as an isolated individual. Perhaps we're all fellow romantics, looking up at the same night sky, trying to wring our own meaning out of the stars. I hope that pursuit never ends.
